In a few days my brother-in-law is getting deployed for 9 months. This is his second trip to the hot, dusty, brown and barren lands full of tanks and giant helicopters and walls and gunfire and what I can only imagine are terrifying noises and things that go bump in the night, but last year […]

  • Teri Biebel - My husband was deployed in 2004 when my girls were 7 and 5. It sucked and it was hard but we got through it. I wish him safe travels and for him to stay safe and return safely to your family!

    • Michelle - I cannot imagine how difficult it is with 2 small children at home. Thank you for your kind words of support! I’ll pass them along…
      🙂 m.ReplyCancel

  • Jen - Please pass my gratitude on to your BIL. My thoughts and prayers are with him and your family! Also–I nominated you for a Liebster Award! 🙂 Here’s the post for the deets:

  • Kami - What a great post!ReplyCancel

  • kyna... - Please tell him we are praying for him and so so grateful for him!

  • Christine - Hi! New reader and military wife here. This was a beautiful post. It sounds like your sister (and brother-in-law of course) has an awesome family behind her for this and that is SO important. And you can totally be there for her even if you’re far away. You can answer the phone when she calls to talk about nothing because it’s lonely and quiet without him. You can send him care packages of yummy baked goodies (it doesn’t matter if it melts, they’ll eat it anyway). And most, and it seems you’ve already got this part down, you can “get” that even though she’s putting on a brave face, this is going to be a hard time for her. 🙂ReplyCancel

  • Kara - Your brother-in-law sounds like he’s on the fast track and I’m sure he’ll do a great job downrange.

I’m glad you took the time to point out that we do what we do by choice (kinda; once you’re in, you do as you’re told, ha!) and people don’t need to pity us. Support is always great, though!ReplyCancel

Our family loves “Modern Family”.  It’s fun to have a prime time show we can all watch together that isn’t a singing competition. Thing 2 especially loves it, I think, because it’s the only non-Disney or Nickelodeon or singing show she’s allowed to watch. There’s been a few episodes in the past 2 years that […]

  • Kari - Nice work! Hooray for Modern Family to help you out… 🙂

  • jeanne cummings - Holymoly AND OMIGOD!!!…WELL done…(from your Morher!!)ReplyCancel

  • Kellie @ Delightfully Ludicrous - Well played! There’s one teen pregnancy bullet dodged!ReplyCancel

  • Jen - I think if my mom had done half as good a job having this discussion with me back in the day I would have had far fewer memories from my college years that I was forced to suppress…nice work!ReplyCancel

  • Jersey Housewife - I’m laughing out loud at her interjection of “hookers” as you were searching for the right word. I’m not looking forward to this discussion but I think I’ll take notes on how you handled it.ReplyCancel

  • kyna... - Oh boy…these are the conversations I am going to dread…as important as they are (and they will happen). I just hope Ellie stays 3 forever! lol!

  • Kelly B. - HOOKERS! hahahaha. oh gosh. I’m bookmarking this to have the chat when I’m a parent.ReplyCancel

  • this hive. - HAHAHAHAHAHA stop it!! she did not say that! omg – that is sooooooo hilarious. so awkward yet soooo awesome. i just love you guys.ReplyCancel

  • Meghan - I love this! That’s kind of like my Mom telling my 17 year old sister that if she were to go missing the cops would probably just assume she ran away to be a prostitute instead of actually ya know get kidnapped. We busted out laughing. My mom is totally Mom of the Year material!ReplyCancel

  • Condom Suppliers - Sex education at its best. Thank you for sharing and two thumbs up for a job well done.ReplyCancel

  • Bethany Mitchell - I too, had this uncomfortable conversation with my daughter=/ while driving….an hour way…too counseling. I bet she had loads to tell her counselor=)ReplyCancel

  • Darcy Perdu - Hilarious! You should teach a Sex Ed course, woman!ReplyCancel

  • AJ Collins - The whole sex convo makes me twitch. My son is 10 and I am aware that he knows more than he is letting on (we’ve had a “talk” already)… but is also super innocent, and I am REALLY okay with that. But as a 5th grader he had a friend that is also a girl over and I had to say no closed doors in his bedroom. To which he said (all offended), “But Adam and I close the door!”… makes me twitch. lol! This post reminds me of this scene in the movie Mean Girls… HAHAHA!

    • Michelle - Love that movie! And you’re right!
Good luck with your 10yo. I kind of wish I had a boy so my husband could take over more of the sex ed. than he does!ReplyCancel

  • Darcy Perdu - Love that she contributed HOOKERS to the convo! So funny!ReplyCancel

  • Mommy Lisa - Okay – I am jealous of her car. Also, Boo Boo cannot get to 16…simple. Or I won’t let her drive maybe???ReplyCancel

  • Ronda - My parents made me recite a similar list of rules when I started driving in front of my whole youth group with a giant construction paper key on my head. So my friends would yell at me for talking to them while driving. So she got off easy in my book! Though I would include the rule of don’t pretend your steering wheel is drum while driving, not from experience or anything.ReplyCancel

  • Kellie @ Delightfully Ludicrous - I made the decision a few years back that I wouldn’t give out christmas cards anymore. Instead I give out christmas tree decorations. I’ve found they cost around the same and people seem really chuffed to get them. As for those who I’d normally post cards to, I’m afraid they have to make do with a seasonally themed email 😀ReplyCancel

  • Amy Matsumoto - so this post made me laugh. Unfortunately it was somewhat awkward, uneasy laughter. It’s hard for me to believe what some parents are okay with allowing their daughters to wear. Even if it is dress up. I just complained to a coworker of mine that girls are quickly running out of decent role models. T. Swift may be the only one left as of now. sad sad days ahead.
    preach it!ReplyCancel

  • Kimmyyy83 - This post definitely made me laugh this morning. But you are right, girl role models these days are far and few between!!ReplyCancel

  • Jennifer fromFUMC - Holy crap! I’ve never seen the Hooker Toddler image before. I’m no prude either but could almost be considered child abuse, in my opinion. That is so, so wrong…on several levels. But, is it weird that now I want to dress up as Hooker Vivian for Halloween? I guess that would also be wrong on several entirely different levels… with the most problematic being the whole my love handles in plain view level…ReplyCancel

  • *LO* - wow i have to sign up for those emails! this is hilarious yet disturbing at the same time. It’s sad almost. That 4 y/o’s skirt is a little too short… it would have been “acceptable” if it was at a normal length!ReplyCancel
