Friday Favorites – Good books, slushy drinks and some serious tweeting

You guys, it’s August first.

It’s August first and that means two things.

One, summer is officially a third over and two, in about three weeks and four days I’ll be taking Thing 1 to college (actually, there’s no ‘about’ about it — it is in exactly three weeks and four days).

And three (which I just this second added), I’ll be simultaneously slugging from a bottle of Pinot and breathing into a paper bag for the next, oh, three weeks and 186 days.

It’s happening.

There’s lots of talk of what to bring and what to leave, threats of what will happen to all the junk in her room if she doesn’t clean it up in the next three weeks and four days, much discussion of everything from where she’ll dress in the mornings, to when she’ll eat, to how she’ll budget her money, and to where all those Harry Potter books she’s bringing will fit. (And all those discussions have been happening pretty much daily for the past two months. See above GIF.)

i cant hear you

It’s happening and I can’t stop it.

So I’ve decided to do what I do best.

When I face it, I’ll be sure to let you know.

Moving on.

Maybe you’re noticing that the Favorites’ list is late today.
Maybe you’re not.
Maybe you were one of the 59 out of 1,767 people who saw my Facebook status earlier. That’s right — 59 out of 1,767 — or .03% of my followers (yes, I did use a calculator and yes, I am proud of myself for remembering how to figure percentages).

You know what I have to say to you, Facebook?

I was up until after 2 a.m. this morning for a couple of reasons, and both of those are coming in at 1 and 2 on the list.
Here we go…

1. Conversations with famous actors
Last night I decided to live tweet while watching Satisfaction, one of the shows I cover on (The fact that I even knew what ‘live tweeting’ was paled in shock value to the fact that I actually knew how to do it…which is still debatable.)

Over the past few weeks, the official Satisfaction Twitter account has re-tweeted a few of my recaps (which is always cool), but I’ve been baiting the show’s star (Matt Passmore) for awhile — adding his twitter handle into a few tweets, etc — to no avail.

Until last night.
We had a conversation.

Sure, what you’re seeing is the extent of it, but if a conversation is defined as one person saying something, the other person saying something back and then the first person responding? CONVERSATION.

After the full hour of tweeting like crazy (here’s a sampling) —

— I was exhausted. But the tweet from my man Matt left me flying high for about two hours. Oh, and when Satisfaction tweeted out the link to my recap, that was cool, too.

I may or may not have made someone else pour my wine after that.

2. Another great book
Last week I shared a fabulous book with you (One Plus One) and this week I read another one.
Well, actually I read it in the past two days.
It was that good.

husbands secret
You’ve probably already read it; it’s been super popular for the past year.
Funny story — I’ve read the sample on my iPad twice over the past few months, and both times thought “meh” so I never bought it.
This week I finally figured I’d find out what the heck everyone was so excited about so I read it.
No, I devoured it.
And from 11 p.m. – 1 a.m. last night, I finished it.
Much of it is heartbreaking, certainly, but the storylines are woven together perfectly.
My favorite part? The epilogue, which I read twice.
If  you’ve read it, you’ll get it.
If you haven’t read it; get it.

3. Umbrella drinks
If you read my post on Tuesday and learned about the horrible thing I discovered in my patio umbrella — it had hands — you know that’s not the kind of umbrella I’m talking about.
I’m talking about cute, colorful umbrellas on toothpicks that go in delicious, slushy drinks.
Delicious, slushy adult drinks.

I discovered these frozen Daily’s singles last weekend and sweet baby Jesus, mama was happy.

The best part (or worst depending on your tolerance…and your level of alcoholism) is that there’s really not enough alcohol in one of them to make you fuzzy, but just enough to give it a kick.
For me, that’s a bonus (contrary to what you might think).

They’re like Otter-Pops for adults (and if you know what I mean by Otter-Pops without having to click that link, you are my favorite today).

4. Bachelorette Bliss
I may not have recapped this season’s Bachelorette — *ducks to avoid things being thrown at me — but I managed to watch.
Sure, I only watched the last three episodes, but that was more than enough for me to figure out who was who and what was going on.

Monday, Andi found her true love (and possible long-lost brother or second cousin) Josh.

Seriously, don

Seriously, don’t they look related? Creepy.

I’m just gonna go ahead and say it — and then run like hell from all the negative Nancys — I think they’re adorable.

andi and josh2

I watched them give a few interviews on Tuesday and I’ve (embarrassingly) looked at Instagram and Twitter photos Andi posted this week, and I believe them when they say they’re happy and in love and everything in life is hunky-dory.

elf love
I know.
I’m a sucker.
It might have been this photo that pushed them into Favorites’ status.

Makes you either want to love them or punch them, and since I can’t punch them…

I actually had a few more favorites for you, but they’re going to have to be shelved.
I’ve got a 13-year-old daughter with a hankerin’ to go shopping and get new shoes, and as we all know, when a woman gets it into her head that she needs new shoes, SHE NEEDS NEW SHOES.

Have a great weekend — I’ll be reading Liane Moriarty’s new book and enjoying a slushy beverage…or two.

This +1 button tells Google you liked what you’ve read. Thanks!

  • Nikki - The Husband’s Secret!!! I avoided my family for three days while I read it. So good! I’ll finish Defending Jacob and then download One Plus One. Also, FYI, those frozen drinks make a nice ice pack…don’t ask!ReplyCancel

    • Michelle - I also liked Defending Jacob! Let me know what you think of One Plus One. Thanks for the ice-pack tip! What a great excuse to keep my freezer filled with them.
